High-Temperature Masking Guide

Plan masking around the actual oven cycle, coating process, removal method and reuse checks rather than a single temperature number.

Describe the complete process

Provide the coating or treatment process, cleaning steps, peak temperature, time at temperature and cooling sequence. Identify the surfaces that must remain clear and any threads or sealing faces that cannot carry residue. Include how operators install and remove the plug and whether parts travel through more than one heating cycle.

Confirm the compound rating

Ask the supplier to review the proposed compound against the complete cycle. Distinguish a short exposure from continuous operation and confirm what any quoted temperature limit means. A general high-temperature label does not establish a reuse count or suitability for every coating chemistry. Keep the agreed compound and cycle conditions with the part specification.

Check the masked result

Run samples through the intended process in representative holes. Inspect the protected area, edge definition and surrounding coating after removal. Record any residue, tearing, movement or difficulty removing the plug. Check the result at the relevant hole-tolerance limits before approving production use.

Set a reuse inspection

Define when an operator should reject a used plug, using the defects observed during process trials. Include checks for visible damage, unacceptable deposits and loss of the required fit. Establish the cleaning method with the supplier and qualify it in the same trials. Base replacement intervals on the actual process results.
